I get asked this every single day on the job. People want a straight answer but the truth is it depends on your house. In 2026 prices have gone up like everything else. If you have a straight set of stairs with no turns or landings you are looking at a much easier bill.
For a basic straight lift you should expect to pay between 3,000 and 5,500 dollars. This price usually covers the machine and a professional coming out to bolt it down. If someone tries to charge you 8,000 for a straight run they are probably taking you for a ride.
The Price of Curved Stairs
Now if your stairs have a curve or a landing in the middle things get expensive fast. These are not off the shelf items. A guy has to come out and measure every inch of your staircase. Then a factory has to weld a custom rail just for you. For a curved lift you are looking at 11,000 to 16,000 dollars.
I know that sounds like a lot of money because it is. But you have to remember that a curved rail is a piece of custom engineering. It has to be perfect or the chair will get stuck or shake you around.
Hidden Costs to Watch Out For
A lot of sales guys will give you a low price then add on fees at the end. You need to ask about the electrical work. Most lifts just plug into a standard wall outlet. But if you do not have an outlet near the top or bottom of the stairs you might need an electrician to come out. That is an extra 300 bucks right there.
* Outdoor lifts cost about 1,500 more because they need special covers and heaters.
* Heavy duty models for bigger folks cost about 1,000 extra.
* Folding rails at the bottom of the stairs usually add 500 dollars.
Is it Worth the Money?
When you look at the cost of a nursing home which can be 5,000 a month a stairlift pays for itself in just a few months. It is an investment in your house. Just make sure you get a quote in writing that includes the install and the warranty. Do not sign anything until you see the final number including taxes.
