What to do when your stairlift stops moving
It always happens at the worst time. You are halfway up the stairs and the machine just quits. Before you panic and call a repair guy who charges 200 dollars an hour try these simple things first.
The Simple Fixes You Can Do
First check the power. Most lifts have a little light on the side of the chair. If that light is off check the wall outlet. Sometimes a vacuum cleaner or a pet can knock the plug loose. Also check your circuit breaker in the basement.
Second check the key. Almost all lifts have a key switch on the armrest. If it got bumped even a little bit the lift will think you turned it off. Turn the key all the way off and then all the way back on.
Understanding the Beeps
Your lift is smart enough to tell you what is wrong if you listen. Most of them will beep if they are not parked correctly. If you hear a steady beep it means the chair is not on the charging pad. Just move the chair an inch or two until the beeping stops.
If you see a code on the little screen like J5 or E2 write it down. When you call a repair shop tell them that code. A good mechanic can tell you exactly what is wrong over the phone just by that code.
* Make sure the swivel seat is locked in the forward position.
* Check the footrest for any obstructions like a stray shoe.
* Wipe the rail with a dry cloth to make sure it is not too dirty for the sensors.
When to Call a Pro
If the motor is making a burning smell or if the chair is jerky you need a professional. Do not try to open the motor housing yourself. There are big springs in there that can hurt you if you do not know what you are doing. Look for a local mobility company that has been in business for at least five years. They will have the parts on their truck to get you moving again the same day.
